When I first started reading and researching the ingredients used in everyday products, I immediately got overwhelmed. Toxins are everywhere. I didn’t pay too much attention until shortly after I had my first child. I already tried to limit processed food, but I started realizing how many other toxins could be in one’s home. For a second I panicked thinking how expensive it would be to transition to less toxic products. Once I sat down and started thinking about the best way to go about it, it wasn’t so bad. I thought about making some of my own products. As a busy mom, I figured I would save myself the hassle for now. Hopefully down the line!
After a few months of focusing on less toxic products, I find myself to be very balanced. I control what I can when I can. I don’t always eat organic food. I also don’t only use glass containers. I do make a conscious effort to make some changes. The easiest way for me to start was to focus on things I was already going to have to purchase. Things I used all the time.
Here’s what I swapped first to create a less toxic household:

Personal Care and Toiletries. Common items like toothpaste, lotion, shampoos, conditioners, body wash, make up remover wipes, deodorant, etc. When I ran out of something, I looked up a better alternative. I looked to minimize the artificial dyes, synthetic fragrances, aluminum, and other toxins that are often found in these products. Attitude and The Honest Company both have many personal care and beauty items that made this pretty simple.

Cleaning supplies. Cleaning supplies are typically used daily. From cleaning wipes, multipurpose cleaners, window cleaners, dish soaps, and more, when you start reading the labels you can see many common cleaning products contain highly toxic ingredients. I have tried a few lower toxic options for multiple different cleaners, but I wanted to really narrow it down to a few brands to rely on for non-toxic cleaners as well. I had already like the Attitude products I used, so I tried their cleaning products and loved them! I have personally tried everything you see pictured and have enjoyed it all.

Laundry detergent. Something everyone uses, sometimes daily. Currently, I have been using the powdered and unscented laundry detergent from Molly’s Suds. Molly’s Suds also has scented laundry detergent (that use natural fragrances), active wear laundry detergent, and an oxygen booster (#ad). The products I have used from Molly’s Suds have worked well. They are similar prices and sometimes even cheaper than other common brands that contain toxic chemicals. Either way, this was an easy swap as a mom because I am constantly doing laundry.
Diaper/wipes. When I started the switch, I also wanted to start ensuring my kids were also limiting their toxin exposure. The first thing I realized that I constantly need for them was diapers and wipes. What I love about Hello Bello is that they are made without phthalates, parabens, latex, artificial fragrances, hypoallergenic, and they come at a decent price! They also have various cute patterns and sell other products as well. I have used the Hello Bello diapers and wipes for a few years and have had great experiences! They are available on Amazon as well as their own website where you can potentially receive more discounts! Both have a subscribe and save option as well. Also Made in the USA!

Food. I have always been pretty good about limiting additives in my foods. I just recently started paying attention to Organic foods. I honestly didn’t understand what organic meant and just thought it was more expensive food. I couldn’t be more wrong. Organic food means it is made with limited pesticides, free of antibiotics, and non GMO (genetically modified organism). I also started to realize that because organic food is becoming more popular, you can sometimes get organic food for very similar prices. There have even been a few times I bought an organic product cheaper than a non-organic product. I don’t do this all the time, but I try when possible and if prices are reasonable. When I don’t buy organic, I do try to limit too much added sugar, artificial dyes, and additives. I personally have had good luck at Costco or even online for snacks and pantry items.

Here are some of my favorite snacks available on Amazon:
- That’s It – mini fruit bars. Minimal ingredients and real fruit.
- BEAR real fruit snack rolls – similar idea to the old school fruit roll ups. Minimal ingredients and real fruit.
- Tractor Bars – organic soft baked bars.
- IQ Bars – plant-based protein bars. Minimal sugar, gluten/dairy free, fiber, and actually taste good!
- Sweet Potato Chips – made with only sweet potatoes, salt, and avocado oil. And so crunchy!

My biggest take away in transitioning to a less toxic home has been to do what I can. Every small change will help limit toxin exposure.
