Creating a Less Toxic Home: The Bathroom
When I started my less toxic journey, I didn’t want to spend a fortune. So I started making swaps with items I use regularly. The bathroom is where I was able to reduce a lot of toxins, creating a less toxic home. Anytime I run out of an item, I check to see it contains toxic chemicals. If it does, I try to look for a better alternative. It’s not always 100% non-toxic, but I usually find a less toxic version of what I was using before at a similar price. I don’t use perfume, but looking at my hair products, skin care, and even medications I was using, I needed to start changing things.
Here are some better, lower tox items I have switched to:
Hair Care:
- Amallow Dry Shampoo
- Attitude Shampoo
- Attitude Conditioner
- Attitude Baby 2-in-1 Shampoo
- Attitude Mens 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner

I started with things I put directly on to my skin-like deodorant, lotions, chap stick, hand soap, body wash, shaving cream, face wash, makeup, etc. I then looked at my hair care as well, including shampoo, conditioner, and even dry shampoo. At first, I aimed to limit common ingredients like parabens, phthalates, aluminum, and fragrance, while also trying to choose products that are as natural as possible.

I personally love the Attitude brand- it’s one of my go-to brands for personal care. The products I have used from them are over 97% natural origin and are EWG (Environmental Working Group) Verified. Having the EWG Verified certification signifies that no ingredients of concern are used, meeting strict standards for health and ingredient disclosure.
Another item to think about is towels. Although this isn’t something I purchase all the time, I would have considered swapping them out as well. When buying fabrics, I try to limit polyester as much as possible. My bathroom towels were already made with 100% cotton, so I haven’t had to replace them yet. If you are looking for some 100% cotton towels, here are some I found:
- 100% Cotton Turkish Towels by American Soft Linen
- 100% Organic Cotton Turkish Towels by Maisonette (#ad)
- 100% Cotton 2 Piece Oversized Bath Towels by Amazon Basics

It can feel overwhelming to first dive into a less-toxic mindset. I try to remind myself that every small change adds up and nothing will ever be 100% non toxic.
